Lake at the Oak Creek Ranch, Barber County, Kansas.
Lake at the Oak Creek Ranch
Choose the Oak Creek Ranch for Kansas deer and turkey hunting, and do some bass fishing on your hunting trips.
There are, of course, reasonable limits on the number of bass you are allowed to take from the lake. You will need to bring your wading boots and a boat or canoe unless you plan to fish from the shoreline. Powered watercraft are not permitted on the lake for fishing done in conjunction with a hunting lease. Electric trolling motors may be used on small boats which are ordinarily rowed if you fish here while on a hunting trip.
Sorry, but fishing and boating at the lake is not an option offered to visitors, except for those who have a hunting lease for the Oak Creek Ranch and a current Kansas fishing license, and then only as a courtesy and on a limited basis. You can discuss this and other details of your annual hunting lease by the acre with Ronnie Hoagland.
For information on Kansas fishing regulations, see this page of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks web site.
The lake is 38 acres when full. The earthen dam is made of 110,000 yards of compacted earth (140,000 loose yards before compaction). The lake water is clear and was about 27.5 feet deep when the lake was created.
The lake is stocked with Florida hybrid bass. They grow up to about three feet long. Only the bass 12" - 14" in length are to be kept. Smaller or larger ones must be released when caught. A 21" black crappie has been caught in the lake.
The ramada at the lake has potable water, part of the 5.5 miles of water lines on the ranch.
